COMPUTER GAMES CAN BE A MOTIVATING WAY TO PRACTICE SKILLS AND IMPROVE LEARNING!
While computer based learning does not replace time spent working and reading daily with your child, it is still a great way to practice skills and enforce learning. The games can be a highly motivating way to engage children. Be sure to set limits with screen time, and sit together to provide feedback and praise for optimal learning. Also please visit our section on Internet Safety listed under the More tab.
AVOID THE SUMMER SLIDE!
The research is clear that children who don't read during the summer can lose up to three months of reading progress and that loss has a cumulative, long-term effect. A summer loss of three months accumulates over the elementary grade summers to become a gap of 18 months by the end of sixth grade. By middle school, summer reading loss plus an initial achievement lag at the beginning of first grade, produces a cumulative lag of two or more years in reading achievement, even when effective instruction during the school year is available.
